    1. Read a bet table properly

    Each bet shows four things: the fair probability of winning, the payout offered, the resulting house edge, and the player expected value. The gap between fair probability and payout is the entire business model, and seeing the four columns side by side makes it obvious in a way a percentage alone does not.

    Compare bets within a game. Roulette in particular is instructive: European and American wheels differ by a single pocket and the edge roughly doubles, which is a very direct demonstration of how small structural differences dominate everything a player does.

    2. Run flat staking first

    Set a flat stake and run a long sequence. What you see is the law of large numbers doing its work: short-run results scatter widely, and the longer the sequence the more reliably the outcome converges toward the house edge.

    4. Watch drawdown and ruin, not balance

    The balance line is the least informative chart here. Drawdown depth and probability of ruin tell you what actually happened, and they are where progression systems reveal themselves.

    A useful exercise: find the sequence length at which ruin becomes more likely than not for a given system and bankroll. That number is usually much smaller than people expect, and it does more to explain casino economics than any amount of prose.

    Expected value is a property of the bet. Staking decides how much you wager and when, which reshapes the distribution of outcomes — more small wins and rarer large losses, or the reverse — but it cannot change the sign of the expectation on a negative-EV game.
